You may experiment with less time and then ramp it up slowly. Kids need some sort of activity in the sun. You can’t simply ask them to stay in the sun. Mom or Dad has to play with them in the Sun.
You won’t get burnt immediately. Redness comes few hours later if you get burnt. Thats the tricky part. You don’t want to get burnt. That is very painful.

History:
No family history. He started having lightly shaded areas without a clear border back in February (2004). Too him to Dr. and said it is a fungus and kept him on anti-fungal cream for 2.5 months. In the meantime, lighter areas got bigger and started a clearer border. Doctor (who is indian) then sent us to a Derm who immediately said he has vitiligo. Both parents went into shock. Mother quit the job on the very same day to take care of him full time. Our mad research led us to this regiment.Regiment:
Protopic twice a day. Rub it in well.
Sun exposure every other day for about 20 mins around 10:30 am or 4:00pm.Stopped milk and red meat.
Extra vitamins include B12 – 25mcg and Folic acid 800 mcg every other day.
C-500mg every other day. We also gave acidophilus for 1 month. Noni juice every morning for 2 months1 glass of freshly juiced vegetables including 1 carrot, 1 celery stalk, 1/4 beet,, 1/4 apples, 10-15 red grapes. This makes a very tasty drink – much much better than regular fruit juice. 1 glass of this every day.
Went to beach many times. Since dead sea is so far away we decided to go to Atlantic ocean beach. He got burnt once on his shoulder and spot near the lip.
He started getting freckles within 3-4 weeks on spots where he got burnt. (Please DONT get burnt. This is painful and dangerous. I am not recommending this at all). His face is even better than the picture shown earlier. All of his spots on face, chest, shoulder show remarkable improvement. Armpit is yet to respond. Since Sun has gone for good (Winter) we decided to buy a handheld NB-UVB lamp. We are still ramping up the exposure with it. Less than two weeks yet.
We did all the above except for Protopic without Dr’s advice. In fact, Dr’s advice was exactly the opposit. I feel sun has lot to do with his improvement because he doesnt have any improvement in armpit which didnt get much sun exposure.
I used to examine his spots with a magnifying glass. Now I have to use the magnifying glass to see his spot on his face. We are very happy with the results. Some ways to go yet. Mom is back in the market looking for a job.
Please ask any questions you may have. My crusade is to help others now. Phew! wrote too much.

Picture below shows the improvement on his shoulder. I hope after seeing these pictures, you will gather strength to fight this. We are not home yet, battle continues.
