One thing I have noticed is that some of the Indian treatments I will be trying state that you need to attack Vitiligo using both external and internal medication. Sounds logical to me. I dont think apart from PUVA, any of the western treatments (NV UVB, cortisones, protopic elidel) seem to do that. And even in the case of PUVA, psoralen pills cannot really be considered internal “treatment”.
This Indian treatment that I want to try does not recommend that you eat tomatoes, lemon/lime, tamarind and some other types of food. I find it interesting that I had a major increase in my Vit last year when I used to eat a ton of Salsa (is contains a lot of tomato). I also tend to eat diet high in Sodium (salt). Mere co-incidence or more than that I dont know.
I havent done much on my NASH. My doc suggested i lose some weight (abt 5-10 lbs to align my weight to the ideal BMI) and go on a low fat diet.
vandana,
yes, I am in in the US now. I was born in india and lived in Bangalore until I was 17. I immigrated to the US in 97. Anyways, about my contribution comment, I didnt mean for it to be specific to you. I meant to say whoever hasnt contributed should try and do so.About my treatments…like I mentioned one of my other posts, I am doing that Indian ayurvedic thing (lime juice+powder+sunlight) and a tablet. I am also occasionally using protopic. Topical treatments are a pain to use. I am considering trying the XTRAC lazer and Narrowband UVB. The main problem with NV UVB and PUVA is that it can tan your skin and make future Vit spots look worse!! So I’d like to give the XTRAC lazer treatment. I just got an estimate from a Derm today. He quoted me a range of $175-$250/session. That is quiete a steep price. I am hoping I can get my insurance to at least partially foot the bill.
As for my fatty liver, my Doc noticed some abnormalities in my liver enzyme tests (CBT, lipid panel etc). Eventually they ended up doing a liver biopsy to determine that it was indeed Non Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis (NASH aka fatty liver). I think it may be related to the cortisone creme….but my Gastroentologist seems to doubt that. I was on Accutane for my acne, so that could have been a potential cause as well. My doc says that some “people just have it”…and I may be one of those people…I have my doubts about that tho. There has to be a cause…one way or the other. See http://www.cpmc.org/advanced/liver/patients/topics/fatty_liver.html for some more info on fatty liver. Cortisone is listed as one of the possible reasons. I think once you stop using the offending stimulant, your liver should return to normal functioning. That may or may not be the case in reality.
How’s your daughter dealing with Vit? How old is she? I have heard there is a lot more social stigma about Vit in India than in the US. Hope she is somehow shielded from that.
